Soo-Won then invites Yona to come down and ride a horse with him, assuring Il that he will not give her weapons. As they ride a horse together, Yona asks Soo-Won about his engagement proposals, leading to an awkward moment between them where Soo-Won tries to quickly end the conversation and Yona lies about being engaged to Hak as an attempt to make him stop seeing her as a child.

To her surprise, Soo-Won congratulates her and she ends up sulking about his cluelessness in her room afterwards. Il tells her that she may also have to discuss about future engagement proposals soon, but Soo-Won will not be an option.

Yona is strongly against this, but her father insists that he will be the one deciding her partner, for the sake of Soo-Won, another member of the royal family, not meeting the same fate Il has, losing his wife and potentially his own life to insurgents.

In disbelief, Yona runs out of her room and stays in a hallway while contemplating the things she has heard. All of a sudden, an unknown man looms at her and, fearing that he is an insurgent, Yona dashes away from him.

She goes into a room, which luckily belongs to Soo-Won, who calms her down. However, remembering her father's words, Yona becomes worried over the chance that Soo-Won will also be attacked by insurgents if she stays with him any longer.

This forces Yona to confess that she lied about being engaged and that she actually has romantic feelings for him, not Hak.

Soo-Won tries to dodge Yona's confession, believing that he misunderstood her, but Yona confirms her feelings once more and asked what his reaction would be.

Soo-Won admits that he had always seen her as a little sister and suddenly was seeing her as a woman, and although he was not able to imagine getting engaged with anyone at the moment, he would no longer be able to hold hands and sleep with her as they had done as children.

Yona is still satisfied with the outcome of her confession, as he is now at least noticing her a little. Soo-Won beckons her over, and Il tries to stop Yona from meeting Soo-Won, who looks back at him, concerned, but continues to walk over to Soo-Won.

Soo-Won gives her a hairpin as a gift, as he thought it suited her. Yona replies in disappointment that her hair was too curly and red for it to suit her.

Soo-Won in turn compliments that Yona's hair was a beautiful red, like the dawning sky. Because of this compliment, Yona suddenly finds herself falling in love with the hair she didn't like, and smiles tearfully.

In the midst of their conversation, Hak appears and tells her that her father is looking for her. But upon arriving there, she witnesses the murder of her father at the hands of Soo-Won.

Shortly after, Kye-Sook and some Sky Tribe soldiers enter the room. Without hesitation, the former demands that Soo-Won must kill Yona.

Terrified, she escapes from them, but she is eventually caught and pinned down by the soldiers. As she is about to be killed, Hak comes to her rescue and defends her, though in the end he is also cornered.

Suddenly, an arrow shot distracts everyone and Hak grabs her to flee. They meet up with Min-Soo, the person who shot the arrow, behind the bushes.

While they are hiding, Yona cries as she expresses her regret of being unable to express her gratitude to her father.

Min-Soo then tells them that he will disguise himself as the princess so that they can get away from the castle. As they carry out the plan, she and Hak manage to escape, but Min-Soo is shot by an arrow.

They continue to hide in the mountains, but at one point she loses the hairpin she got from Soo-Won. She is quickly saved by Hak, but he suffers a venomous bite in the process.

After that she receives her missing hairpin from him. After she awakens, Tae-Yeon feeds her and asks her about her relationship to his brother to which she answers that they are friends.

Yona is about to rephrase her answer when Hak stops her and tells her to keep a low profile and tells her to go by a new identity, Rina pronounced "Lena" , a court lady in training.

When she finally regains her strength, she is asked to do laundry and Hak guides her to the river. However, she is unable to do her chore as there is no water in the river.

Hak immediately orders Han-Dae to investigate. Soon after, Mundok returns; she immediately goes to his side and he gives her a hug.

However, her moment of happiness is quickly cut off when Han-Dae comes back and reports that the Fire Tribe is blocking the water stream on their river.

She learns from Mundok that this is a warning from the Fire Tribe as they are trying to make Soo-Won the next king.

She goes out to search for Hak. She finds Tae-Yeon first and sees him talking to his brother, though Hak leaves just as she arrives.

Before setting out to follow Hak, she first thanks Tae-Yeon for everything he did for her. She continues her pursuit of Hak and manages to catch up with him at the entrance gate.

She orders him to let her go with him, but Hak refuses as he already surrendered his title and his surname. She persists in asking him despite his efforts to make her stay at Fuuga, and in the end she wins their little fight.

Mundok appears before them and bids them farewell, but not before telling them that somewhere in the mountains along the Wind Tribe's border with the Fire Tribe lives a priest from whom she can seek advice.

Hak continues to fight below; however, as the poison gets the better of him, he loses focus and is successfully attacked, wounding him and leaving him hanging on for dear life to the edge of the cliff.

Yona runs to help him but is stopped by Tae-Jun grabbing her hair. After she sets herself free, she goes down to the cliff and tries to drive away the soldiers who are attempting to kill Hak.

Yona of the Dawn. Cover of the first volume, featuring Yona. NA Viz Media. Anime television series. NA Funimation.

Anime and manga portal. Akudama Drive The fact that Soo-Won was willing to kill Yona, one of the people he loved most in the world, and destroy her entire future making both her and Hak fugitives just for the throne broke Hak's heart.

On the very day that Soo-Won killed King Il he also gave Yona a hairpin telling her that her hair was beautiful to encourage her knowing the fact that she hated her hair at the time.

She had just confessed her feelings for him Soo-Won and Hak believes that Soo-Won was a very cruel person for doing that to her.

Although in the recent chapters of the manga, Hak for the first time had a monologue where he talks about his feeling towards Soo-Won, demonstrating that Hak doesn't really hate him, but he still doesn't understand why the current king of Kouka acts and his ex-friend would do such a terrible thing.

Thus because of everything that had happened it took a long time for Hak to trust anyone especially his teammates when it came to protecting Yona.

But as time passed he learned that not everyone will betrayal him like Soo-Won had and came to care about Yona and the Four Dragons, thinking of them as friends.

Out of the four dragons, he is close with Jae-ha and Kija despite their different personalities and banter they have seemed to care about one another and will protect each other and their teammates.

When it comes to his heart, Hak destroys his impulses every time they resurface, even though it hurts to do so. There are times that he will show his affection with teasing, but not much beyond that.

However, when someone particularly Jae-Ha questions the emotional distance between Hak and Yona, Hak loses his composure and can become territorial around the princess.

He seems cold around Yona at first, but slowly reveals that he truly cares deeply for her. Hak gave up his General title and his lively hood in the Wind Tribe just to keep her safe which shows his loyalty, integrity, and devotion to not only Yona but to King Il as well.

Hak, in general, isn't a forgiving person and that is why he finds it so hard for him to understand people like Yona and Jae-Ha who choose not to be swallowed by the impulse for revenge and hatred as well as moving past the hardships they have faced in their lives and he Hak wants to be able to do the same.

In Chapter , as he rescued Jae-Ha and Kija from the Xing soldiers he mentally asks Yona and Jae-Ha how he can move to pass his own hatred for others that are trying to hurt them and for Soo-Won on particular.

Despite the fact that Hak has gained better control over his emotions when it comes to seeing Soo-Won face to face he like Yona still suffers from the emotional and mental trauma of the betrayal.

By the age of thirteen, he was powerful enough to defeat Lee Geun-Tae who was already a general at that time. However, when Yona was being assaulted by Kan Tae-Jun , he stopped him and finally accepted the position Emperor Il offered.

Added to his list of titles is 'Chief of the Wind Tribe' which makes him one very young and accomplished person. This leads to the beginning of Hak and Yona's journey to fulfill the prophecy Martial Skills: Hak's skills with the Chinese Guandao polearm, or glaive, are the best in the country.

His speed and strength allow him to deal powerful blows, even sweeping aside a large area of fog with one swift strike. Swordsmanship: While not his first choice of weapon, Hak is proficient with a sword and ultimately is the one who trains Yona in swordsmanship.

Archery: Hak is an excellent shot with a bow, able to shoot bullseyes and birds out out the sky with ease, even on horseback. He is also the person who mostly teaches Yona archery, though Yoon also contributes.

Immense Strength: He is noted to have unusual strength by numerous people, including the four dragon warriors. Due to his strength and abilities, he was jokingly given the name "Black Dragon", or "Darkness Dragon" by Kija.

Despite this, Hak soon was considered as the fifth dragon by the other four dragons. Although not a dragon-blooded warrior, he matches the strength of other dragons easily.

Hak is in fact strong enough to catch boulders while sitting comfortably with one hand. Endurance: One of his more defining attributes is his stalwart heartiness, first shown when enduring a bite from a venomous snake when protecting Yona.

That being said, this may be mostly due to his determination to live and protect Yona. Basic Medical Skills: Though not as good as Yoon, Hak has shown to have a basic knowledge of medicine.

He was able to remove snake poison from his system, and he shows Yona how to remove the thorns and disinfect the cuts she received from the Senjuso test.

Hak being scolded by Mundok. Hak kisses Yona's forehead. Because of his oath to King Il to protect her, he considers himself a tool for her to use [12] and will do anything for her sake.

In chapter , when they go to Kouka in hopes of negotiating with Soo-Won to stop the threat of war, an overly-stressed Yona worries herself to the point of hyperventilation and faints.

Touched, Hak embraces her tightly and confesses his feelings for her. Unfortunately, because his voice was muffled, Yona didn't comprehend what he said, only catching the tail-end of it.

When she asks Hak to repeat his sentence, he lets go of her, embarrassed for almost spilling his secret.

The next morning, Yona wakes up recalling that in her dream Hak had told her something important.

In chapter , they're about to split up to find aid to delay the impending war. Seeing Hak's anxious expression, Yona reaches up and pulls Hak into a kiss, leaving shortly thereafter.

Hak, having dealt with an unrequited love for years, is unequipped to deal with this new development, and is teased by Ogi.

Il reads a book to Yona. Because it was given Daran Norris Yona the night the King was killed, Hak dislikes the hairpin, personally wanting nothing more but to smash it. Hak, being a naturally loyal person, was the here at Soo-won's betrayal for a few reasons. This helps her settle their differences before leaving Ik-Soo's home. Min-Soo then tells them continue reading he will disguise himself as the princess so that they can get away from the castle. She can be selfish and demanding of others in her pursuits, which is first noted when Yoon scolds her for not thanking him for taking care of Hak. In Chapter See more confides in Jae-ha about please click for source feelings for Yona, explaining that he'd never planned to tell her about .

This prompts her to decide to tell him he is free to go back to them if he wanted to. Having taken this as an expression that he's no longer needed, Hak becomes visibly upset and distant from Yona, though he does decide to stay regardless.

After swift intervention from the others, Yona quickly realizes her mistake and asks him to stay. Annoyed that she'd think he would leave, he tells her he is following her because he wants to and states that his home is among the Happy Hungry Bunch now.

Touched by his words, Yona asks him what he plans to do about his fiancee if he's staying. His frustration snaps and he angrily confesses that he loves her, leaving Yona blushing and stunned, but seemingly finally aware of his feelings.

In the past, Soo-Won and Hak were childhood friends and their bond seemed unbreakable. Due to this, Hak trained vigorously so that he could become someone worthy of being a goal for Soo-Won, who aspired to be as strong as Hak, one day wanting them to walk on equal ground.

The two were also mentioned to have raised a falcon named Gulfan together [18]. However, their friendship ended the night Soo-Won murdered the King.

Like Yona, Soo-Won's betrayal hurt him worse than any wound of the body, but initially, he didn't outwardly show it to anyone.

Deep inside, he seethes with blood lust and wants Soo-Won to pay for what he did to Yona and King Il, believing it to be his job to one day kill him.

When Hak saves the princess from a nest of snakes after she'd gone to look for the hairpin, he gives it to her having found it earlier , stating that he would never forgive Soo-Won.

Because it was given to Yona the night the King was killed, Hak dislikes the hairpin, personally wanting nothing more but to smash it.

He believes Yona to still be in love with Soo-Won because she clings to the hairpin. In Awa when he finds Yona crying on the ground after having had an encounter with Soo-Won, he reprimands himself thinking he had become too complacent for not focusing on what he believed to be the real danger and letting his guard down.

Thinking of this, he glares off into the distance, causing Jae-Ha to comment on his "sorrowful blood lust.

In chapter 91, Hak succumbs to murderous rage when he finally comes face to face with Soo-Won at the end of the water tribe arc, attacking anyone who got in the way in his warpath to reach Soo-Won, even the other dragons.

As Jae-Ha and Kija hold him back, Soo-Won and his entourage make their hasty departure, Hak struggling against the two in his desperate need for revenge.

He regains his senses when Yona touches his hand and tells him she's okay, freezing Hak in place when he realizes the extent of his actions.

Although Hak despises Soo-Won, it's shown that this stems from how much he cared for his former friend and how he could not fathom that on the day he plotted to kill King Il he gave Yona that hairpin.

He stated that on that night when he saw Soo-Won ready to silence the princess, he was struck with so much grief that he "felt his heart shatter to pieces.

At first, Hak thinks of Emperor Il as a 'bubbly' king who is a coward. However, when the emperor stopped Tae-Jun from initiating a fight by grabbing the blade of his sword, Hak started to respect him and vowed immense loyalty to him and his family.

Because Emperor Il was his master, he is guilt-stricken for being unable to save him from Soo-Won, even saying that he will regret it for the rest of his life.

Hak regards Yoon as a very valuable person on their team. Despite the fact that Yoon is lacking in physical strength, Hak sees him as a very strong person and is able to trust him with looking out for Yona.

Later, their rivalry seems to have mostly faded and they seem to regard each other as friends, though they still good-naturedly bicker from time to time.

Kija seems to consider Hak an honorary brother, as he asks Hak to call him "Big Brother"—an offer that Hak promptly refuses, though the exchange still prompts an inner monologue about how grateful Hak is for Kija and the others in his and Yona's life.

Kija seems quite supportive of Yona and Hak's blooming romance, despite his own romantic feelings toward Yona. Though they don't share many interactions, Hak considers Shin-Ah a capable person.

Later, they seem to be quite close, often being shown having casual chats together. Shin-Ah is easily able to tell that Hak is upset following a misunderstanding between him and Yona.

Much like his relationship with Kija, Hak bullies Jae-Ha at every possible moment and smacks him when he flirts with Yona. During their first encounters, Hak found him to be very talkative and piqued his interest due to his fixation on freedom.

When Jae-ha is revealed to be the Ryokuryuu, Hak become begrudging allies with him, and Jae-Ha immediately takes to teasing Hak relentlessly about his clear affections for Yona.

Hak feels at ease sharing his responsibilities with him. Later, their relationship grows quite close.

Though they still bicker playfully, Hak seems to use Jae-Ha's "Droopy Eyes" name, less like an insult, and more like a nickname.

Jae-Ha seems to back off on teasing Hak so much about his feelings for Yona as well, ever since learning about Yona's previous affection for Soo-won and how hard the betrayal struck him.

In Chapter Hak asks Jae-ha In his head what he can do to get rid of his hatred. In Chapter Hak confides in Jae-ha about his feelings for Yona, explaining that he'd never planned to tell her about them.

Jae-ha congratulates him for the confession regardless and asks off-handedly asks what it was that he had wanted to talk to Yona about while they escaped from Gobi's men back in Xing.

Hak falls silent briefly but eventually says that he had wanted to ask Yona if she was truly alright to relinquish her hairpin.

He goes on to admit that it may only be him who is stuck in the past, while both Yona and Soo-won have already moved on.

Out of all the dragon warriors, Zeno is the one Hak understands the least. Hak thinks the same applies for the dragons warriors, which Zeno appreciates hearing.

Jae-Ha questions his relationship with Yona often, poking fun at him any chance he gets. After the princess's risky mission, Hak tends to Yona's injuries by pouring honey on her hands, which had splinters in them from collecting the medicinal Senjuso plant, and zones out, thinking of what Jae-Ha had said, spilling the honey all over them.

However, despite these antics, she considers him as someone special she denies any kind of help if Hak will be the payment for it [23] and greatly relies on him whenever she is in a dire situation.

However, she started to change her dependent attitude when they became fugitives. As Hak is the only person she has left, she fears for his safety when he is protecting her, and this motivates her to become stronger so that she can protect him in turn.

Lately though, she has been showing some signs that she is slowly developing feelings for him. While wandering around during the night, Yona happens upon Hak sitting alone.

She leaves briefly but upon her return she gives him a protection charm that she had bought earlier, wishing that it would bring good fortune to him.

Hak replies, "Princess, if you can be happy then to me that is the greatest happiness". Soon after hearing these words she returns to bed.

She suddenly starts crying, thinking to herself that his words made her so happy yet so sad. With this she begins to realize that she has fallen in love with him but wonders when he became so special to her.

In chapter , she attempts to confess but, thinking that he would definitely make fun of her, she stops in embarrassment. Later, Yona confesses to Lili that she has feelings for Hak, also admitting that she is too embarrassed to confess, to "start over" as she puts it, given how well and for how long she has known him.

Midway through the Xing arc, she suddenly grabs hold of his cloak and kisses him just before departing to get Tae-Jun's help in holding up Soo-Won's army from marching toward Xing.

Leaving him stunned and confused, she admonishes herself for giving into her impulse and kissing Hak without his permission.

Once the conflict is wrapped up, she overhears a conversation between him and the Wind Tribe about his supposed fiancee Ayame , and decides to tell him he has the freedom to return home if he wanted to.

Hak, misunderstanding this to mean he's no longer needed, is hurt and grows outwardly glum. After intervention from the others, she clears up the misunderstanding--stating how he's important to her and asking him to stay.

Fed up with her misunderstanding how he feels about her and the Wind Tribe, Hak angrily blurts out a love confession to Yona.

This prompts her to fall to her knees in shock, blushing fiercely at his proclamation. Even though her actions obviously show affection towards him in the next few chapter onward, Hak is still oblivious to her feelings and is noted to be suffering from the "the ill effects of unrequited love".

From an early age, Yona had a crush on Soo-Won. Over the years, she increasingly grew frantic over her appearance especially over her hair that she hated during his visits to Hiryuu castle and blushed upon any physical contact they made or even from just a simple compliment.

Though she understood that Soo-Won only saw her as his little sister, [27] this didn't stop her from trying to convince her father, who was strongly against the idea, to let her marry Soo-Won.

Her deep affection for Soo-Won ultimately becomes the cause of her breakdown after his betrayal. Since then, their relationship has become very complicated.

Yona clearly shows hostility towards Soo-Won whenever they meet but she still finds it hard to move on from her feelings, as evident by the fact that she is unable to discard the hairpin Soo-Won gave to her on her birthday.

In Chapter Yona tells Lili that the kindness and gentleness that he Soo-won showed in the castle when he was with her and Hak was all a lie.

She then explains to Lili that now, using a feeling other than the love she had for him before, she wants only to understand him and to understand what he wants to achieve.

The two of them did not have a smooth relationship at first because of how Yoon despises royalty. Yona is criticized by him for her ignorance and selfishness, which she acknowledges.

This helps her settle their differences before leaving Ik-Soo's home. They become friends over time and she learns various things from him, throughout which she praises his knowledge.

As much as Yoon is constantly looking out for her, she does the same for him even if she will get hurt in the process.

She sees Kija as a beautiful man, and is always fond of his appearance due to her love of pretty things. She trusts Kija and his abilities, even when he is in doubt of his usefulness, and reassures him that he is helpful to her and that he can never be replaced.

When Kija tells her to give up Hak she swiftly refuses and Kija gets jealous. Yona believes that Shin-Ah is a very kind person despite what the villagers said against him.

She is not afraid to help him when he loses control of his power and meets him head-on despite the possibility of him devouring her. As he is nameless before meeting her, she gives him the name "Shin-Ah" which symbolizes how he became the moonlight for her in the darkness.

She makes a promise to Shin-Ah to become stronger with him after he overuses his powers and collapses [39]. They are shown to have a very close relationship, Yona often showing kindness and admiration to Shin-Ah, and Shin-Ah acting the most vunerable around her.

She is unaware of any feelings he harbors for her because he rarely shows them towards her. Because Jae-Ha is running away from his sealed-in-a-stone fate, Yona has a hard time recruiting him.

However, she is able to become close to him and indirectly change his mind because of her personality. When Jae-Ha flirts with her, she misunderstands it as some sort of bullying and compares him to Hak.

However, several scenes in the manga suggest that he has feelings for her as well. To her, being around him is warming, as if he is a golden ray of sunshine.

When Zeno saves her from being killed by enemy soldiers and slumps, corpse-like, to the ground,Yona cries as she rues her lack of strength to protect him.

However, Zeno's power prevents him from dying, therefore making him the first and last Ouryuu.

In the beginning, she is annoyed by Tae-Jun's frequent flirting with her and would go as far as claiming that she and Hak were in love to avoid him.

This makes her glad as she sees how much Tae-Jun has changed from an arrogant man to a responsible and good person.

As such, she entrusts the job of saving the Fire Tribe to him. Gi-Gan is like a mother to Yona; she finds her strictness and kindness to be a very nostalgic and sad feeling as she has little to no memories of her real mother who died when she was very young.
